Dear Daisy, Be the Tortoise. You Will Still Get There. Love, Daisy

Posted By on September 20, 2010

We’re two weeks (and change) into the Leap Out of Your Box challenge.   I am working still on learning how NOT to be a Too, Too Daisy.   I’ve considered that a big part of that challenge means I must make do with progress, not perfection, but I don’t think that’s quite enough.   Sometimes treading water is the best we can manage, and that has to be okay too.   Example:  My diet is much healthier, yet I mysteriously gained 2 pounds.  I could call that a failure, focusing on the 2 pounds, or a success, focusing on the quality of food I’m eating.   I know myself well enough to realize that the latter is too big of a stretch for me.  But, I think I can look at it as a net-zero, and be content with that.   And, rather than amping it up and “just trying harder” (a set-up for failure), I am going to keep plugging along at a pace that works for me.  Change takes time.

Yep, one thing at a time, and no hurting yourself by hating yourself.

I really like your discussion of progress rather than perfection. Whether it’s weight (as it can be for me too) or getting my exercise or any number of other goals I might be working on, when I try for perfection, I get frustrated because it isn’t going to happen.

But if I try for progress, and use my own standards for what that is, I do way better!

My husband and I have a habit of asking each other during the evening, “What was best for you today?” Often it was something beautiful, like the clouds over the mountains or a sunset, but many times it is a bit of progress!
