Five Counter-Intuitive New Year’s Parenting Resolutions

Here are a handful of my parenting resolutions for the New Year.  I plan to use this post as a springboard for further thinking and posting on all these topics over the next months – a sort of blogging roadmap for myself and this site. If you’ve got others to add to the list please give me a shout, in the comments or via email or Twitter.

1.  I Will Not teach tolerance.

Instead, I’ll model interest and appreciation.

2.  I Will Not insist that my child respect authority.

Instead, I will teach him the importance of respecting everyone.

3.  I Will Not insist that my child respect me.

Instead, I will strive to earn his admiration.

4.  I Will Not promote independence.

Instead, I’ll emphasize the value of interdependence.

5.  I Will Not tell him how proud I am of him.

Instead, I will let him know how much I enjoy him.
